In 2020 Opportunity on Deck provided 471 participants with the opportunity to participate in our in-person sports-based development programs at no-cost to them or their families. The athletic leagues that we provided included basketball, dance, floor hockey, baseball, soccer and volleyball. In addition, we hosted a no-cost summer camp for 45 kids, brought 52 students on a college visit to DMACC, launched the new Youth Leadership Program for 20 future role model coaches, and supported a Chrysalis after-school club of 31 middle-school girls. Online, we provided countless participants with the chance to practice their sports skills from home three times a week from March to July.
Throughout all of our programs, our goal has been to reduce as many obstacles to participation as possible, which we hope to achieve by offering online activities, translating flyers, choosing easily accessible practice locations, providing transportation to practice, serving a meal every night, and of course providing all of our coaching, equipment and uniforms at no-cost to the kids and families we serve.
Outside of our programming efforts, we also added Ariel to our team as the director of programming, added Hannah to our team as an AmeriCorps VISTA and completed a significant strategic planning and transformation process with the support of our board of directors.
None of this progress would be possible without our great support system, so thank you to everyone who stepped up to support our organization and the participants we serve. I specifically want to thank our legendary sponsors including the Delta Dental of Iowa Foundation, the Iowa Arts Council, Iowa Economic Development, the Lohse Family Foundation, the National Association of Independent Life Brokerage Agencies, NCMIC and Professional Solutions, O’Donnell & Friends Charities, the Andrew Giving Fund, and the Principal Charity Classic Birdies for Charity program.
2020 certainly has been an unpredictable year filled with uncertainty, and while I can’t be sure what 2021 will bring, I promise that Opportunity on Deck will persevere to continue to serve the youth at the center of our mission.
