Tavian Banks and Jennie Baranczyk To Serve as Celebrity Coaches

CLIVE, Iowa – Opportunity on Deck, a non-profit that offers free sporting opportunities to elementary-aged kids, will hold the second annual Game for Good fundraiser to take place at Principal Park September 13th at 4 p.m. Former Iowa Hawkeye Tavian Banks and current Drake University women’s basketball coach, Jennie Baranczyk, will lead two teams of 12 players that have a passion and commitment to support youth development and will get a chance to play like the pros and relive their glory days by swinging for the fences for the afternoon.

Opportunity on Deck executive director, Dylan DeClerck, explains, “The Game for Good is a unique once-in-a-lifetime experience for a few individuals in our community to play softball on the field at Principal Park and be coached by an all-time State of Iowa great.”

Banks was a high school standout in both football and soccer at Bettendorf High School Bulldogs before committing to play for the Iowa Hawkeyes. During his senior campaign of 1997, Banks rushed for a school record 1,691 yards and 17 touchdowns, an Iowa single season record that would stand 11 years. Banks still holds the school record for touchdowns scored in a career with 33.

Baranczyk, a former Iowa Hawkeyes women’s basketball player, was a three-time All-Big Ten selection and won Big Ten’s medal of honor for academic and athletic excellence upon graduating in 2004. During her tenure at Drake, Baranczyk has led the team to two WNIT and three NCAA Tournaments. During the 2016-17 season Drake was undefeated in Missouri Valley Conference play.

This event is a wonderful opportunity to show your support to the community and benefit free-of-charge athletics programs around the Greater Des Moines area. Opportunity on Deck invites you, your friends and family to come out and show their support!

Since 2012 the Opportunity on Deck mission has been to serve central Iowa communities by providing free-of-charge athletic opportunities for children who otherwise would not be able to participate due to rising costs. More than a sports organization that teaches skills and techniques, Opportunity on Deck uses sports as an avenue to connect kids with area role models, to emphasize the importance of being an active part of a diverse community and teach lifelong values of hard work, teamwork and dedication. Over the past six years free sporting opportunities have been provided to approximately 2,000 kids in six different sports, saving families $100,000+ in league fees, equipment, coaching, uniforms, etc.
