OPPORTUNITY ON DECK NEWS
Session 1 Programming A Success
Opportunity on Deck completed four clinics in the first session of 2019, including basketball and dance in both Ankeny and Clive. In total approximately 75 kids and 25 volunteers took part across the four clinics. Each of the dance locations put on a final performance that wowed family and friends.
The feedback we receive is very important to us as it help us know what to focus on and where we can improve. A recent comment from a parent was more focused on the character traits sports can provide. “Dylan and his staff are awesome. They teach the kids how to model good sportsmanship displaying patience with kids of different skill levels. The coaches are positive, keep the kids positive, focused and engaged. They don’t scream at the kids when they do something wrong but encourage them to do better and point out how they have improved,” said Quanisha White (whose son, Deon, has been attending OOD programs for 3 years)”
Deon is excited to see how his friends have grown as players and wants to give back after he ages out of the program. “It is great to play and learn with my school friends,” said Deon. “‘Some of them started having never held a basketball and are now comfortable players. I hope to come back as a coach to help others learn.”
Hearing those words from Quanisha and Deon encourage and drive us here at Opportunity on Deck. We want to build lifelong relationships one clinic or activity at a time.
