OOD Forms New Partnership to Provide Meals
Opportunity on Deck recently partnered with the Child and Adult Care Food Program and Central Iowa Shelter and Services to provide complete, nutritious meals after each sports clinic, beginning with soccer this spring.
“Opportunity on Deck wants to be more than just an organization that provides sports. We know that a greater percentage of our kids and families receive free or reduced lunch and we are always looking for ways to bridge that gap and provide healthy meals outside of the school day, said OOD Executive Director Dylan DeClerck. “We are so excited about this
partnership with Child and Adult Care Food Program and Central Iowa Shelter and Services and what it will mean to our kids.”
Besides of providing meals to kids and families, the Community Kitchen program run out of the Central Iowa Shelter and Services provides on-the-job training and employment for up to 15 homeless men and women each year. The Community Kitchen is a United Way funded program that prepares and delivers more than 165,000 meals a year to meal sites across the metro. Meal sites are located in Polk County neighborhoods where poverty levels range from 25% to 33% (U.S. Census- 2000).
